
A sudden cessation of a mediastinal chest tube drainage after a CABG is a hallmark sign of cardiac tamponade, especially if drainage prior to cessation was heavy.
Blood and fluid accumulate in the pericardiac sac and compresses the heart preventing the atrium and ventricles from adequately filling. Therefore, circulation is affected due to the reduced cardiac output.
